Typora: a markdown writer’s soul mate

For Mac users, at least, Typora is the best markdown editor

Typora, a cross-platform minimal markdown editor, recently came out of beta. For struggling writers, it brought with it a dilemma: shell out the $15 for a tool we’d come to depend on, or find a suitable alternative.

Initially, I felt confident I could do the latter and save some hard-earned pennies. After all, markdown editing isn’t that complicated. Excellent, free tools should be available, right?

I used to be a big fan of iA Writer, and I’d also heard about this hot new thing called Obsidian. There are plenty of markdown editors on Mac but, having tried some alternatives for a brief post-beta period, I found myself irresistibly drawn back to Typora. Both Obsidian and iA Writer had major blockers that I just couldn’t work around. Typora just works exactly how I want it to.

What Typora gets right

  • Great compromise between WYSIWYG and raw text
  • Minimalist, but with necessary features included
  • Comprehensive keyboard shortcuts
  • Outstanding file monitoring

WYSIWYG
